Obama is some kind of conservative

Neither liberals nor conservatives want to hear the opinion that Obama is a conservative. Liberals want to believe that “their” president is on their side, and conservatives want to believe that Obama is a liberal anathema. But there is an explanation that may be satisfactory to some liberals and some conservatives.

There is a rare kind of conservative who sometimes, and on some issues, puts his country and nation first, who sometimes thinks the nation should be united, standing on common ground. Perhaps our conservative president shares something with that kind of conservative.

There is another rare type of conservative who recognizes that to keep an economy going, it isn’t enough to have all the wealth in the hands of a few, like the typical third-world nation. Rather, this type of conservative thinks that ordinary people should have some of the money so that they can buy things. Perhaps our conservative president shares something with that kind of conservative.

There is the odd conservative who recognizes that some government services are necessary, and that taxes are necessary to pay for them. Perhaps our conservative president shares something with that kind of conservative.

There is the very rare conservative who knows that people are more productive when they are healthy, and when they are not worried about their health or their families’ health. And, even though addressing this can deprive the wealthy of additional income, perhaps our conservative president shares something with that kind of conservative.

Believe it or not, there are a few conservatives who believe that all citizens of a nation should enjoy some of the benefits accruing to that nation. Perhaps–just perhaps–our conservative president shares something with that rare breed.

I could go on with further examples, but you get the point. Before America fell to the neoconservatives there were conservatives who occasionally put the interests of America and American citizens ahead of their own interests. Sometimes they had no choice, sometimes they just wanted to keep people quiet, and some rare birds sometimes did so because they actually felt it necessary or even just.

In the end, if you believe that Obama has some of the rare traits that I listed, and you focus on these alone, then you might believe that he is a liberal. But if you view these traits in the total context of Obama’s actions, you recognize that he is a conservative.
